La Mesa Library event kicks off 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

SDCL celebrated the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program with a special event in January 2015 at the La Mesa Branch. Mayor Mark Arapostathis and Library Director José Aponte started off the event with a morning of reading. 18,633 people have registered and 5,151 have completed the program within the first 6 months.

If you read three books a day to your child, in just one year you'll have read 1,095 stories and studies show that your child will be better prepared to learn to read. Participating children track their progress on a fun, interactive chart and earn prizes along the way. All books count towards the goal, even if they are the same ones being read multiple times, books being read in different languages, or books read at library storytimes. Prizes are awarded for every 250 books read and include a drawstring backpack, book, activity book, certificate, and stickers. Kids completing the program are featured on SDCL's online Hall of Fame. Older siblings are encouraged to participate by reading to their pre-K counterparts and are honored as "Superhero Readers" on SDCL's website.
