Frequently Asked Questions
What is Books-by-Mail?
Books-by-Mail is an award-winning program that is available to all qualifying San Diego County residents.
Who can receive service?
You are eligible for Books-by-Mail if you:
• Are temporarily or permanently homebound.
• Have a disability or are ill.
• Are the caregiver to someone who is ill.
You may also be eligible for service if you lack transportation or live in a remote area of San Diego County that is far from a library or a mobile library stop.
How are books selected?
Each customer fills out a detailed application about his or her reading interests. Applicants are asked to list their favorite genres and authors.
The reader can select from various reading formats, i.e. regular print and/or large print books, audio books, only paperbacks, no large or heavy books and magazines. Customers/Readers are welcome to make specific requests. Staff makes selections based on the individual's reading profile.
Readers automatically receive a new bag as soon as the current one is returned. A maximum of six items per bag can be mailed. The check out period for each item is three weeks. The items can be renewed if no one is waiting.
Which types of materials are available?
Readers can check out books, magazines, and audio books (CDs and cassettes). At this time it is not possible to check out DVDs, videos, newspapers, or interlibrary loan materials.
Is there any cost for this service?
For all qualifying residents, Books-by-Mail is a free service. All postage is pre-paid and your San Diego County Library card is also free.
Books are returned to the library in the mailing bag in which they arrive. While there are no fines for late returns, fines are incurred for lost or damaged items.
