San Diego Legends Exhibit Coming to Bonita Museum & Cultural Center

February 29, 2016

The Bonita-Sunnyside branch of the San Diego County Library is partnering with the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center to present the San Diego Legends exhibit, which will be on display at the museum, 4355 Bonita Road, from March 2 through April 9. The exhibit features vibrant portraits and photographs of local community elders who lead by example.

An opening reception will be held at the museum on Friday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. Portrait artist Mona Mills and San Diego County Library Director José Aponte will be present at the event, which will also include refreshments and live music.

The Legends project, started in 2013 by the San Diego County Library and the County of San Diego's Aging & Independence Services department, is an annual artistic recognition of local elders. It comprises painted portraits by local artist Mona Mills, photographs, and impact statements about citizens who have led exemplary lives. The "legends" exemplify lifestyles that embrace inclusion, spiritual integrity, humanism, and healthy living. Their lives and accomplishments are a testament to the nobility of hard work, as well as respect for each other and one's self.

"This project is a tremendous tribute to the leadership of individuals who have greatly improved our community and who are a source of inspiration touching all our lives," said Library Director José Aponte.

The public will also have the opportunity to meet two of the exhibits' subjects and gain new perspectives on Bonita as part of a Q&A series to be held at the Bonita Library, 4375 Bonita Road: Sal Barajas, one of the original Chicano Park muralists, will be interviewed on Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m., and Aurora Cudal, a Filipina-American community activist and columnist for the Filipino Press, will be interviewed on Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m.
