2018 Service Learners of the Year

San Diego County Library's Service Learning program gives local teens volunteer work experience for school credit and personal enrichment. The following teens have been selected as Service Learners of the Year in recognition of their outstanding contributions and commitment to the library.

Collin McCann

Alpine Branch

Collin was chosen as the Alpine branch's Service Learner of the year because he exhibits maturity beyond his age. Collin communicates well, is dependable, stays on task and is self-directed.

David Steiger

Casa de Oro Branch

David is a 17-year-old senior at Grossmont High School. He began his service work at the Casa de Oro branch last June and during his time with the branch has proven to be a quick learner. David started out sorting and shelving books and has since moved on to completing more challenging tasks, including assisting with crafts, shelf reading and helping at a table for our Día del Niño Celebration.

David accepts tasks without complaints and always shows up with a can-do attitude. He truly is an asset to the Casa de Oro branch.

Nicole Sturman

Encinitas Branch

Nicole is a rock star! She always comes into work with a positive attitude. She is a self-starter and has been the most consistent and reliable Service Learner we have had at the Encinitas branch all year. She always calls if there are any changes to her schedule. Nicole has assisted with the Differently Abled Craft, the branch's signature ten-year anniversary event, and our Hamilton event.

Itsarely Palma

Fallbrook Branch

Itsarely has been volunteering at the Fallbrook branch for almost two years. In that time, she has never lost the enthusiasm in her service. Itsarely has been a key volunteer in our Tween Takeover program, and it is in her engagement in this program where you see her true dedication to helping those around her.

Itsarely always goes above and beyond to help set up, conduct, and clean up after the program. She provides good ideas, helps make things run smoothly, and makes sure to find ways in which she can help even more. Itsarely is responsible, efficient and the tweens enjoy her presence and help, which is part of the reason they keep coming back to the program every week.

Teresa Tovey

Fletcher Hills Branch

Teresa volunteers at the Fletcher Hills branch every Wednesday and helps with a variety of tasks. She especially enjoys working with children in our Storytime Crafternoon Program.

Teresa is always helpful, enthusiastic and ready and willing to help with anything needed at the branch. She is also a talented musician who provided a wonderful holiday concert with her family. Teresa is an awesome Service Learner!

Spencer Fisher

Imperial Beach Branch

Spencer has been volunteering at the Imperial Beach branch since it opened last year. He has been an exemplary student learner who is always willing to help. Spencer is dedicated, detail-oriented, funny and willing to learn. It is easy to see that he enjoys being at the branch, which truly helps both staff and customers. Everywhere Spencer goes, he radiates positivity.

Maritza Carrisoza

Lemon Grove Branch

Whenever Maritza comes into the Lemon Grove branch, she brings a positive attitude and is ready to work. She has been volunteering at the branch since September 2017 and continues to work two hours per week. When she arrives for her shift, she greets staff with a big smile and a happy hello.

When it comes to accomplishing her duties, she is highly reliable. Every time we've asked her to do something, she is eager to lend a helping hand. She is kind, personable, and independent. We appreciate all the hard work Maritza does at the Lemon Grove branch.

Zoe Daniels

Poway Branch

Zoe started volunteering by shelving books, but was quickly promoted to being a program volunteer. She has become invaluable to our STEAM Monday programs. Since September 2017, she has also been teaching our monthly Tween Watercolor class, which has become one of the most popular afterschool programs for tweens this school year.

When Zoe sees a need, she steps up without being asked. Last summer, Zoe came to a library event as a participant. An unexpectedly large number of people were in attendance, so Zoe signed in, put on her volunteer badge, and joined staff in handing out craft supplies without even being asked. Zoe is an amazing volunteer and we are grateful to have her assistance.

Rachel Schwantner

Ramona Branch

Rachel has been a Service Learner at the Ramona branch since July 2017. She is Secretary of the Teen Action Council (TAC) and documents and schedules TAC meetings. In addition, Rachel is the Student Liaison of the Friends of the Library.

Rachel is dedicated and we can count on her help with special programs like Día. The Ramona branch is grateful for her enthusiasm and dedication to the library.

Christopher Goshell

Rancho San Diego Branch

Christopher has been a Service Learner for the Rancho San Diego branch since March 2016. He has provided well over 100 hours of service. He is reliable, dependable, and very efficient. Christopher has been an outstanding help to the staff, while serving his community.

Caitlin Fermental

Santee Branch

Caitlin is a remarkably responsible Service Learner. We especially appreciate her strong work ethic, awareness of time, and ability to complete tasks. She is always positive about her job duties and fully embraces her commitment to the library.

Brenda Jimenez Lopez

Solana Beach Branch

Brenda is the stellar early-morning Service Learner at the Solana Beach branch. She comes into the branch faithfully at 7 a.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday before school. She has been very dedicated and we will miss her when she graduates this summer and goes on to high school.

Kevin Luna

Vista Branch

Kevin has volunteered a total of 679 hours at the Vista Library to date. He has helped with every Signature Event at the library from the Fall Festival and DIY Fest, to the Mommy and Me Royal Tea Party.

Kevin also assisted with starting the Pixel Art Initiative and has helped with countless other programs and crafts. He has cleaned furniture, prepared craft materials, organized library supplies, served food, shelved materials, and has helped with many other things. Kevin has completed all of his tasks without complaint, showing initiative and an incredible work ethic.
