The following volunteers have been selected as Volunteers of the Year in recognition of their outstanding contributions and commitment to the library.
"Grandma" Betsy has been the heart and soul of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library's Grandparents and Books storytime for 20 years. During that time, she has read books to delighted children every week and has gotten to know each of the new faces that the passing of time has brought. She has even had the opportunity to read to the children of those she had read to when they themselves were young! Her efforts have provided much more of a benefit than the noteworthy achievements of promoting literacy and being a consistently friendly presence; she has been a true provider of the sense of community that has helped define this library branch. Indeed, as much as she has helped Cardiff, she IS Cardiff.
Ayeda Dawood is an essential part of three storytimes a week at the El Cajon Library. Ayeda is great with kids and parents, and the librarians say she is welcoming and kind. Ayeda speaks Arabic and is great at explaining to the Arabic-speaking parents what storytime is all about and why it is important that their children participate. The librarians who work with Ayeda at the storytimes say she is a big help and that her friendliness and warmth is appreciated by the parents and children who come to El Cajon Library storytimes. In addition to all Ayeda does with storytimes, she often helps staff with questions from patrons in Arabic. Ayeda also shelves books and helps to pull books for patrons. Ayeda is a dedicated team player whom staff and patrons alike see as a great contributor to the El Cajon Library.
Pat Kelly is the current President of the Friends of the Library bookstore at the Bonita Branch Library. She has been personally involved with managing the Friends group and bookstore. The bookstore was recently renovated to include a new storage unit, extended pathway, and extension of the store itself. Pat has represented the interests of the bookstore while working with the architect, facilities staff, and other planners. She has also been responsible for delegating donation pickups from Amvets and storage cleaning parties.
Marian Klein has been the President of the Friends of the Library for three years and will serve another two-year term, 2015-2017. Marian has served as Membership Chairman of the Valley Center Friends of the Library (VCFOL) for five years. Marian is the VCFOL Bookstore Manager and works several days a week in the bookstore. She organizes special, large book sales throughout the year, including the Annual Holiday Book Sale, Bates Nut Farm Book Sales, and June Book Sale. Marian serves on various library committees, including the Annual Meeting Committee, Budget Committee, Programs Committee, and Western Days Signature Event Committee. Marian attends many VCFOL functions and raises funds for the library on an ongoing basis. Marian ran for Honorary Mayor of Valley Center during Western Days 2014 and raised significant funds for the Valley Center Branch Library.
Serving as the Fallbrook Library Art Committee chair, Larry Miller uses his connections within the San Diego art community to select the talented artists and works that will be included in the library art shows. He personally hangs the works, an all-day job. He organizes and hosts a reception for each show, with music and food. He then takes down the art at the end of the show and ensures it is all safely returned to the artist. His creativity and dedication shows in the quality of the art and artists, the excitement of the community for each new show, and the diversity of the art, artists, and techniques that are showcased. He has had everything from pastels to fruit crate labels, both local and international artists. He has given many hundreds of hours of his time to make the shows he organizes the best they can be, and because of this he makes the Fallbrook library a more beautiful place.
Verna volunteers every week at the Ramona Branch Library coordinating the kindergarten through sixth grade Homework Help program. Through this program, students in grades K-6 receive help with math, English, and science. During the summer, Verna coordinates and tutors children for the "All Stars" program, a program designed to help kids maintain learning during the summer months. Last year, she also volunteered to assist with SDCL's Tax Preparation program through AARP, which provides services to low-income residents.
