The following volunteers have been selected as Volunteers of the Year in recognition of their outstanding contributions and commitment to the library.
Sarah has embraced all of her volunteer duties with enthusiasm. She has set up and led the popular Lego Builders Club, she collects and checks in the paging list, empties the book drops, and assists the Youth Services Librarian with after school children's programs. Sarah creates a positive, nurturing, and safe environment for children and parents to enjoy, while helping children build self-esteem, confidence, and respect.
Robin volunteers at the Borrego Spring Library three days a week and helps staff with daily operations. She is a great supporter for staff and is an avid reader, making her the branch's main resource for book recommendations. Most of the library's regular customers go directly to Robin when looking for a good mystery book. In fact, the Borrego Springs branch has dedicated part of the main gondola for her recommended reads and she has to restock it daily. Her attendance and reliability help ensure the branch has adequate coverage.
Irene does an amazing job of promoting library programs through word of mouth and through a monthly column in the local newspaper. Irene also serves as the Friends of the Library Vice President and Membership Coordinator. She collects recyclable materials to help raise funds for the library, and last year she set, met, and surpassed a goal of bringing in 100 new members to the Cardiff Friends of the Library organization.
Steven is an instrumental volunteer for both the Friends of the Library Bookstore and the El Cajon branch. He dedicates his time to open, manage, and close the bookstore as well provide assistance in different capacities. Steven has a positive attitude every day and is tremendously helpful with branch duties such as shelving, working through the paging list, packing library materials for shipment, and shelf-reading. Steven also jumped in to help move, transfer, and shift children's materials out of the recent flood in the branch, helping library staff make materials accessible to the public during construction.
Flo has served as the manager of the Friends of the Ramona Library Bookstore since 2011. She was responsible for organizing the opening of the bookstore when the new Ramona Library opened, along with coordinating all bookstore volunteers and schedules. She plans and conducts the annual bookstore volunteer luncheon and assists branch staff with special events such as the Community Halloween event, Día de los Niños and the Winter Celebration. Flo also attends all FOL Board meetings, oversees the online auction book sales, assists with bookstore volunteer recruitment, and coordinates large book donations.
Sherry has volunteered around 17,500 hours at the Rancho San Diego branch throughout the last 15 years, including working with the planning commission, architects, and community groups to create the new Rancho San Diego Library. Sherry is also the founding president of the Friends of the Rancho San Diego Library, always advocating for the library in the community and reminding folks of the important role that the library plays. She received the Celebrate Literacy Award for exemplary service in the promotion of literacy, put out by the International Reading Association and the Greater San Diego Reading Association. She runs the Courtyard Bookstore, which has brought $375,000 and counting to the Rancho San Diego branch for programs and books.
Vickie is the current President and Bookstore Manager for the Friends of the Solana Beach Library. She has designed bookstore sales strategies and schedules to keep inventory moving and capitalize on unique collections. She implemented an online sales program which has contributed to increased revenue over the last two years. She coordinated a weekly book recycling program in which the unusable donations go to a charity. This program has evolved into a book buyback/trade-in, which has helped fund special programs at the branch.
