Get a Library Card

All current cardholders continue to have access to library resources and do not need to reapply. If you need assistance using these resources, please contact us.

If you need to renew your Instant Digital Card, please visit our Customer Support page and complete a support request.

In Person

Visit your local SDCL branch to apply for a library card. Bring a picture ID and proof of your current address with you to pick up your card. If you’re under 18, you will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

California residents and military: Free

Free replacement cards: First replacement is free; subsequent replacements are $1.00 each.

Non-California resident fee: $5.00 one-time fee

Library cards will not be renewed/replaced unless all outstanding fees are paid. Accounts with a balance of $100 or more may be subject to collection agency action.

The customer is responsible for all materials borrowed on their card. Report lost or stolen library cards immediately.

Instant Digital Card

Instant Digital Cards give San Diego County residents immediate access to SDCL's digital eLibrary resources, including ebooks and audiobooks. All you need is a cell phone number.

  1. Download the Libby app from your device's app store.
  2. Open Libby and find San Diego County Library.
  3. Sign up with your mobile phone number (starting with the number 1)

eCard Application

Due to computer upgrades, San Diego County Library is currently unable to issue eCards.

Please visit your local branch to apply for a library card.
