Honoring Veterans Among San Diego County Library Staff

This Veterans Day, we are celebrating our very own veterans on staff!

For Librarian I Daniel Aguilar, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps was a natural choice.

Daniel – who defines himself as a patriot – served from 1998 to 2004. Coming from a family of immigrants, he joined the military right before he turned 18 to give back to a country who gave him and his family so much, he says.

Before enlisting in the military, Daniel remembers thinking, “If I don’t do it, who will?”

After his time with the Marines ended, Daniel found purpose in his job with San Diego County Library (SDCL), where he manages the teen service learner volunteer program at the Vista Library, continuing to help his community whenever he’s needed.

Library Technician III Sandra Gonzaga served in the Air Force from 1985 to 1997. Sandra calibrated and repaired electronic test equipment all over the world, including in El Salvador – a country she fell in love with after the two weeks she spent there in 1996.

“I wanted to travel, see the world and continue to serve like my dad did in the Navy before me,” Sandra says of her time in the military.

It was her passion for reading and her desire to help others develop that same passion that pushed Sandra to work for the library after she got out of the military. You will find Sandra doing just that at SDCL Headquarters!

Thank you, Veterans for your service, today and every day!
