The Seeds & Sustainability Project aims to help the community have a positive impact on the environment through gardening and composting.

11 San Diego County Library branches are stocked with a supply of starter seeds to promote gardening and access to homegrown food. Those who take seeds from the seed library do not need to later return seeds to share.

In partnership with the First Partner’s Office and the California State Library, State Parks is providing free passes to over 200 participating state park units operated by State Parks to library-card holders.

Library cards expire every four years so that we can update our records. Please contact your branch for assistance.

Eliminating overdue fines leads to an increase in library usage, saves staff time, and promotes equitable access.

As part of the upgrades, we have a new app! Search your app store for "San Diego County Library" and look for the new logo to find it.

All of SDCL is starting a new chapter, customers included. We have eliminated fines for overdue materials, and left all overdue fines behind in the old system.

SDCL will attempt to renew your borrowed item two days before the due date. If successful, your loan period will be extended for 21 days from the existing due date, an additional full loan period. If unsuccessful, you will continue to receive notices about overdue items. You may wish to try to renew manually before you return the item.

One of the new features is AutoRenew. SDCL will automatically attempt to renew your items 2 days before they are due.

We're launching a brand new chapter this year, from a new logo and website to a new computer system and online account experience.

San Diego County Library will attempt to automatically renew your borrowed item three days before the due date. If successful, your loan period will be extended for 21 days from the existing due date. If unsuccessful, you will continue to receive notices about overdue items. You may wish to try to renew manually before you return the item.

As a San Diego County Library cardholder, you can make online requests for books from participating libraries in California and Nevada. Books requested through Link+ will be shipped to your local SDCL branch. This is a free service.

Library High School is also known as Career Online High School. SDCL has renamed the program on our website and marketing materials to highlight this as a new service offered at the library. A prerequisite is something you are required to complete before enrolling in a full program. The Library High School prerequisite class is designed to help you determine if you will be successful in an online learning environment. You are required to pass the prerequisite course with a score of 70% or better, and you must complete the prerequisite course within 2 weeks after enrolling.

Library High School allows adults to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online. The program is free and fully online, meaning you can work at your own pace.

The San Diego County Library is no longer able to accept physical donations of materials for the collection, with the exception of items produced by local authors or musicians.

SDCL purchases materials at steep discounts that come with labels, barcodes, and covers, ready for customer use. It costs more for the library to accept a donation and prepare it for circulation, than it does for the library to purchase a new item, prepared for circulation by our vendors. If you would like to support the library’s collection, we encourage you to donate funds for the purchase of physical and digital materials for our communities.

Please visit our Get a Library Card page for current information on how to sign up.

San Diego County Library has more than 135,000 free eBooks and audiobooks - including a kids' collection - available through the Libby app from Overdrive. Read or listen on your Nook, Kindle, tablet, mobile phone, and other compatible devices. Materials are automatically "returned" to the library - no late fees!

Additional titles are available via the Palace Project App in partnership with the California State Library and Lyrasis.

As a San Diego County Library cardholder, you can request books and periodicals from other library systems anywhere in the continental United States. The books will be shipped to your local SDCL branch. This may be a free service if the lending library does not charge. ILL staff tries to fill your request from libraries that do not charge a lending fee first. Fines for late, damaged, or lost books are different, so please keep reading.

As a San Diego County Library cardholder, you can make online requests for books from University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, San Diego State University, Cal State San Marcos, and San Diego Public Library. Books requested through San Diego Circuit will be shipped to your local SDCL branch. This is a free service.

Customers with a valid San Diego County Library card may use the public internet stations as long as the Internet Policy is followed. Children under the age of 18 must have an Internet Parental Consent Form on file that has been read and signed by the parent or legal guardian and the child. An SDCL internet sticker will then be placed on the child's card. All SDCL branches are also equipped with wireless internet.

Materials must still be returned to the library or the customer will be charged for the item and a processing fee.

All PINs were reset as part of the transfer. Once you have created a MySDCL account and updated your PIN, go into Libby and log in with the new PIN, telling the app to remember this info.

28 days after the due date, customers will be billed the price of the item + a $5 processing fee.

The community features allows SDCL customers to enjoy the reviews and comments of the broader library community. All participating library users will be able to see your lists and comment if you choose to make your profile public.

"Place Hold" adds you to the wait list for an item and it will arrive at your branch for you as soon as it's available. "For Later" let's you keep a list of things you want to read/watch someday, but not right now, and you will need to place a hold on it when you're ready for it.

Your laptop must be enabled for wireless use. To access the network, your laptop or PDA must have a wireless network interface card (NIC) installed. These cards are available for purchase from several manufacturers at many computer stores. Your laptop computer or PDA equipped with a wireless network card, must support either the 802.11a/b/g/n standard wireless protocol. The library wireless system will not operate with Bluetooth enabled devices. Bluetooth is designed for low power, short distance peripheral devices that typically communicate with computers and telephones.

You may place your own request using the online catalog, or ask a library staff person to assist you in making the request. There is no charge for this service.

If SDCL doesn't own the item, you may place a request via Circuit or Link+ if a copy is available.

Convert your eCard to a Standard Card by visiting any San Diego County Library branch with your valid photo ID.

The current library is no longer large enough to meet the needs of the community. The current facility is in a leased location and is just 6,000 square feet. In 2022, the Casa de Oro Library was visited nearly 30,000 times with customers checking out over 63,250 items (physical plus digital). The branch held 209 programs with 1,553 total attendees and there is limited community gathering space.

Please read the details on each pass carefully. Each museum or attraction decides how many people it will admit with a pass. Some are family passes and others offer free access to one person per pass.

No! Seeds do not need to be returned to the library.

There are no limits on checkouts for content purchased by the California State Library from Biblioboard and the Palace Marketplace.

The new library is approximately 16,000 square feet, more than 3 times the size of the current facility.

Performers and educators are booked by individual branches on an as-needed basis. Branches may draw from a list of County approved vendors to book programs relevant to their communities.

While daily late fines are going away, library materials are on loan and customers will still need to return items or they will be charged the item cost and processing fee. Accounts with a balance of $100 or more may be referred to collections and assessed a $10 Collection Agency fee. Customers owing more than $20 will continue to be blocked from checking out. If a lost item is found and returned in good condition within 90 calendar days of the date the item was paid for, the customer may apply for a refund of the item cost. The processing fee is non-refundable.

If you have turned on check out receipts by text, you will receive one text per item checked out, which can add up to a lot of texts. Consider an email receipt instead, if this is bothersome. Feel free to ask staff to help you set this up.

Please try the last 5 digits of the phone number listed in your account. If you do not have a phone number listed, try the last 5 digits of the library card number. If you still have trouble, contact your branch library.

You can transfer up to 14 credits from your former high school or from high school equivalency test sections you have passed (such as the GED test or the HiSET test). A minimum of 4 full credit courses must be taken through Smart Horizons Career Online Education in order to be eligible for a high school diploma.

Services other than http/https such as telnet, FTP, secure shell, outgoing SMTP mail, etc., are not supported. It is recommended that enterprise mail be accessed via webmail to avoid port blocking. Some sites and services may also be filtered by the County’s content filtering solution, which may prevent access.

Publishers generally sell their digital titles by the copy and they can only be checked out to one person at a time (the way physical books are sold). SDCL monitors the number of customer requests on each title so that additional copies can be purchased as needed. SDCL is able to offer select titles with unlimited access for a period of time for programs including Books of the Month and One Book, One San Diego.

There is a maximum of 10 requests/checkouts at any one time. Each title is a separate request. However, a number of them might arrive at the same time and they would all have the same 3 week loan period.

Circuit materials will not be assessed overdue fines. For lost or damaged items, the charge is $100.

Materials are the property of other institutions. All costs and fees for lost or damaged materials will be the responsibility of the customer and costs will vary based on institution and item.

An online survey and “contact us” form is available on this page. Residents may also share input through a print survey at the current Casa de Oro Library branch.

There are a few reasons why you may not be able to make a reservation:

    • All passes for the attraction are currently reserved.
    • You have two active reservations—the maximum you can have at any given time.
    • You’ve already used up your passes for this attraction this year.
    • Your account is not in good standing.

Children under 13 can't select their own username. They are automatically assigned a color, animal, and number.

SDCL collects a variety of books and media that are written, published and/or produced locally. We are now accepting submissions of physical copies of locally produced books, DVDs and/or music CDs for review. To submit your item for consideration, print out a copy of the Local/Self-Published Author Donation Form and drop it off with one copy of your work at any of San Diego County Library's branches. This document also contains information about the library's selection process.

Due to the fact that we acquire materials from lending libraries all over the continental United States (not foreign) who choose the method of shipment, arrival times vary greatly. If within the county, it could be within a few days but if on the East Coast it could take 30-45 days.

The library currently does not offer printing while using the wireless network. We suggest that you save any pages to disk that you may wish to print later, or you can email the information to yourself. Printing is available on the public use computers provided within the library.

The awarded contractor has created an initial design concept for the new library that is posted on this website page. You can also view the design concept in person at the current Casa de Oro Library. Please note: The initial design concept shared in February 2024 will evolve as the project moves forward and revisions are made.

The New Children's Museum has discontinued their library pass program and those passes will no longer be available from SDCL. Any previous requests for those passes have been removed from our system.

An SDCL internet sticker will then be placed on the child's card. All SDCL branches are also equipped with wireless internet.

• Discover & Go

You need a library card to reserve a free pass (starts with 01535). Visit your local San Diego County Library branch to apply for a library card. Bring a picture ID and proof of your current address with you to pick up your card. If you’re under 18, you need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Each San Diego County Library holder is allowed to reserve up to two passes at a time.

Please read the details on each pass carefully. Each museum or attraction decides how many people it will admit with a pass. Some are family passes and others offer free access to one person per pass.

After you make a reservation, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to the Discover & Go website. Follow this link to login with your library card number and view your pass under “My Reservations.” Print your pass from here shortly before your visit.

Please note: You cannot cancel your reservation once you have printed or downloaded your pass.

Please read the details on the pass carefully. Some museums or attractions may accept mobile passes and others require a printed pass.

Please bring the printed pass and a valid photo I.D. such as CA driver’s license, CA ID card, government issued ID Card, passport, or school ID card. The name on the pass and I.D. must match. If the attraction accepts mobile passes, you can present the pass on your device.

Reservations are first come, first served. If a pass is not available for the attraction or date you want, please make a different selection.

Reservations can be cancelled if the passes have not been printed or downloaded. To cancel a pass, log in to your Discover & Go account and click on “Cancel Pass.”

No, if you reserve a pass and do not use it or cancel the reservation, the unused pass will count towards your limit. Please note: some institutions only allow you to reserve one pass per year.

There are a few reasons why you may not be able to make a reservation:

    • All passes for the attraction are currently reserved.
    • You have two active reservations—the maximum you can have at any given time.
    • You’ve already used up your passes for this attraction this year.
    • Your account is not in good standing.

  • Seeds & Sustainability

The Seeds & Sustainability Project aims to help the community have a positive impact on the environment through gardening and composting.

11 San Diego County Library branches are stocked with a supply of starter seeds to promote gardening and access to homegrown food. Those who take seeds from the seed library do not need to later return seeds to share.

Available seed quantities vary by branch. Please contact the seed library closest to you for details.

No! Seeds do not need to be returned to the library.

Each seed library will feature a variety of food producing seeds such as melon, squash, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers, as well as flowers to support pollinators. Many seeds are California native plants, and others have been regionally adapted for growing in San Diego County (in zones 9 and 10)

In 2022, San Diego County Library received grant funding to support the launch of seed libraries at 11 branches. Libraries were selected based on community need and to allow for access throughout the region. Following the grant period, seed libraries may expand to other locations.

  • New Casa de Oro Library

As of February 2024, the County of San Diego has selected a Design-Build contractor to begin the design and construction of the new Casa de Oro Library.

    The estimated building timeline is:

    • Construction Phase Begins: Winter 2025
    • Opening: Spring 2026

The new library will be located at 9610 Campo Road Spring Valley, CA 91977 near Spring Valley Academy.

The new library will be approximately 12,000 sq ft with an approximately 2,000 sq ft Community Room. Design concepts are shared at the top of this page.

    • Public computers plus laptops for checkout
    • High speed internet access and Wi-Fi throughout the branch
    • Community Room with after-hours access for community events
    • Study rooms
    • Teen area with study rooms
    • Children's area with early-literacy activities
    • Teen area with study rooms
    • Patio space
    • Friends of the Library Bookstore
    • Designated parking lot

The new library is being built to Zero Net Energy and LEED Gold standards. This means that each year the library’s solar panels will produce the electricity it needs to operate.

The County of San Diego opened a Request for Statement of Qualifications, and subsequently a Request for Proposal to procure Design-Build services for this project, starting in early 2023. The Source Selection Committee reviewed the submissions at each stage of the procurement process and selected the highest scoring team.

The new Casa de Oro Library project will be led by EC Constructors Inc.

This project is funded by the County of San Diego.

An online survey and “contact us” form is available on this page. Residents may also share input through a print survey at the current Casa de Oro Library branch.

The awarded contractor has created an initial design concept for the new library that is posted on this website page. You can also view the design concept in person at the current Casa de Oro Library. Please note: The initial design concept shared in February 2024 will evolve as the project moves forward and revisions are made.

The new Lakeside library is designed to be a Zero Net Energy building. This means that the energy needed to operate the branch is completely offset by the sunlight harvested and then used to energize building systems.

Yes, there are 60 oversized parking stalls, 2 EV charging stations, and a quick drop-off area near the front of the building.

    • Bringing the outdoors of Lakeside and Lindo Lake into the branch through art and theming
